Albemarle: Q2 Recovery Does Not Remove Lithium Price Risk
Summary
I am downgrading Albemarle from a STRONG BUY to a HOLD. The balance sheet and demand evidence are better, but current valuation already discounts a healthy mid-cycle outcome while lithium-price downside remains severe. Q2 2026 net sales rose 31% to $1.743Bn, adjusted EBITDA increased 155% to $858Mn, and adjusted EPS of $3.75 beat the $3.20 consensus by 17%.
The demand and Specialties pillars strengthened, but the original mix and contract-protection arguments weakened because Energy Storage growth was overwhelmingly price driven and long-term agreements remain index referenced.
My 2027 base case is $5.73Bn of revenue, $2.34Bn of adjusted EBITDA, and $9.90 of adjusted EPS. A 6.5x EV/EBITDA multiple discounted at 10.7% produces a $97 present target.
