The AI Boom Is Getting Expensive. Now Investors Have to Ask Who’s Actually Paying
Oracle, Ciena and Credo sit at different points in the AI capital cycle. The investment question is shifting from who can build the infrastructure to who can earn an attractive return from it.
Weekly Stock Market Outlook
The first phase of the artificial-intelligence trade asked how much compute the world would need. The second asked what would become scarce when that compute was deployed at scale.
The next question is less exciting, but more important for investors:
How much will it cost to build, connect and operate the AI economy and who ultimately earns the return?
That question has moved from the background to the centre of the market debate. AI demand remains strong, but the infrastructure required to serve it is becoming extraordinarily capital intensive. Data centres need processors, memory, optical systems, high-speed interconnects, land, power and financing. Revenue may arrive over years. Much of the spending arrives first.
That is the backdrop behind this week’s three companies: Oracle Corporation (NYSE: ORCL), Ciena Corporation (NYSE: CIEN) and Credo Technology Group (NASDAQ: CRDO).
Oracle is building cloud capacity and trying to monetise it. Ciena moves traffic between data centres and across networks. Credo supplies high-speed connections inside AI infrastructure. Together, they show how money moves through the buildout—and how differently the risk is distributed.
The goal is not to declare an AI bubble. It is to separate demand from returns. A supplier can post exceptional growth while its customer earns an inadequate return. A cloud operator can build an enormous backlog while free cash flow remains negative. And a genuinely valuable technology can still become a poor investment if expectations rise faster than earnings.
