The Refining Boom Is Back. But Can Higher Margins Sustain the Rally?
Summary
I am rating this company a Hold because, while stronger refining margins, resilient fuel demand, and efficient operations support earnings growth and cash generation, the cyclical nature of refining profitability and potential margin normalization limit further upside at current valuations.
2Q FY 2026 results demonstrate the earnings potential of a highly optimized refining network. Significant improvements in refining profitability, strong operational execution, and disciplined capital allocation have supported exceptional financial performance.
Strategic investments in higher-value refined products, alongside exposure to expanding natural gas and midstream infrastructure, provide additional growth opportunities beyond the immediate refining cycle. These investments should strengthen earnings diversification and support longer-term cash flow generation.
Despite compelling operating fundamentals, the sharp appreciation in the share price introduces valuation risk. With expectations already reflecting unusually favorable refining conditions, future upside will depend on whether margins remain elevated, new projects deliver attractive returns, and management continues returning excess capital to shareholders.
